MMORPGs are a type of massively multiplayer online game (MMOG)

MMO games allow gamers to interact with thousands of other gamers simultaneously on either a computer or mobile device, typically featuring a persistent world that continues to exist and develop even when the player is offline; many also provide socialization and virtual economies; MMO games come in all sorts of varieties such as role-playing video games, simulations and social games.

Early massively multiplayer online role-playing games were developed from text-based multi-user dungeons (MUDs) run on university mainframe computers during the 1970s and 80s. Later, graphic MMOs came about.

Many MMORPGs feature fantasy or science fiction themes. Others use sharded universes with each region only accessible at certain times of day or week; other MMOs, like Eve Online or PlanetSide for instance, use one seamless universe for all gameplay - these examples include space-based Eve Online or military combat title PlanetSide respectively. There are even hybrid MMO games like Castle Infinity and Alteil that combine puzzle and adventure elements into their gameplay experience.

They are based on fantasy themes

Fantasy MMOs have quickly become a favorite genre of online game stores, becoming more and more popular as time goes on. Some feature complex stories with multiple factions while others focus more on character building or quest completion. Many MMORPGs employ business models ranging from freemium games with microtransactions for advertiser funding up to various subscription plans that range in costs depending on business strategy.

Some MMORPGs feature player-vs-player combat while others focus on player-versus-environment or nation conflict. Many also provide social activities and systems such as guilds, chat rooms, trading, etc.

MMOs span from medieval castles to futuristic space stations and often feature real actors or actresses lending their voices and likenesses for voiceover roles in these games. Examples of an MMO that effectively tells an engaging story with its unique visual style and cast of characters is The Secret World; another great one would be Guild Wars 2, which continues to add new expansions and living world content with every update.

They are free-to-play

MMO games often boast large game worlds with thousands of simultaneous players playing simultaneously, creating an immersive environment which is constantly updated with new features and gameplay; socializing opportunities; an in-world virtual economy; as well as support for socialization or an economy in-world. Therefore, some developers are opting for middleware software which allows the focus to remain on gameplay rather than maintaining databases which run MMO games.

Air Warrior was the original multiplayer flight combat simulator released for GEnie online services in 1986, but more recently there have been multiple genre-spanning MMORPGs like Second Life created by Linden Labs that has attracted much media coverage; other casual MMORPGs focused on music or rhythm such as Audition or Dance Dance Revolution have gained great media interest; others may offer puzzle-based non-combat gameplay, like BigWorld or Space Frontier or Mankind which feature science fiction themes.

They are a subscription-based game

MMORPGs allow players to interact on a massive scale with each other and take part in an ever-present world, offering many different kinds of gameplay types spanning most video game genres. Furthermore, these games have pioneered new business models and set trends within gaming culture.

Some MMORPGs combine several genres, like Castle Infinity and Neopets Collectible Card Game; while others such as EverQuest provide deeper immersion into fantasy and adventure worlds.

World of Warcraft remains the undisputed king of its genre and continues to require subscription, yet still offers multiple ways for players to play and enjoy the game - Timewalking allows players to revisit old expansion dungeons for rare loot, while World Quests help them complete objectives on their free time.

There are various MMO racing games, such as iRacing, Trackmania and Audition Online. Some are casual such as Just Dance World Dance Floor. Others use strategy as in EVE Online where players control spaceships through an enormous universe.
